A balanced diet fuels cognitive processes from "summary" of Healthy Brain, Happy Life by Wendy Suzuki,Billie Fitzpatrick

Eating a balanced diet is not just about keeping your body healthy, it also plays a crucial role in fueling your cognitive processes. Our brains require a variety of nutrients to function at their best, and these nutrients are found in different foods that make up a balanced diet. When we provide our brains with the right mix of nutrients, we are essentially giving them the fuel they need to perform various cognitive functions. For example, omega-3 fatty acids found in foods like fish are essential for brain health and have been linked to improved cognitive function. Antioxidants found in fruits and vegetables help protect our brains from oxidative stress, which can damage brain cells and impair cognitive function. B vitamins, found in whole grains and leafy greens, play a crucial role in energy production in the brain, which is essential for optimal cognitive function. On the other hand, a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can have a negative impact on cognitive function. These foods are often devoid of the nutrients that our brains need to function properly and can lead to inflammation, oxidative stress, and impaired cognitive function. In fact, research has shown that a poor diet is associated with cognitive decline and an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's. In order to keep our brains sharp and functioning at their best, it is important to prioritize a balanced diet that provides the nutrients our brains need to thrive. By choosing a variety of nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats, we can ensure that our brains have the fuel they need to excel in various cognitive tasks. Making mindful choices about what we eat can have a profound impact on our brain health and cognitive function in the long run.
