Sugar consumption is linked to metabolic syndrome from "summary" of Fat Chance by Robert H. Lustig

Sugar consumption is linked to metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. When we consume too much sugar, our bodies are unable to process it efficiently, leading to a cascade of negative effects on our metabolism. The liver plays a key role in metabolizing sugar. When we consume excess sugar, the liver converts it into fat through a process called de novo lipogenesis. This excess fat can accumulate in the liver, leading to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition closely associated with metabolic syndrome. Moreover, excessive sugar consumption can lead to insulin resistance, a condition in which cells become less responsive to the hormone insulin. Insulin resistance is a hallmark of metabolic syndrome and is a precursor to type 2 diabetes. High sugar intake also contributes to inflammation in the body, which is another underlying factor in the development of metabolic syndrome. Chronic inflammation can damage tissues and organs, leading to a variety of health problems. In addition, sugar consumption can disrupt the balance of hormones involved in appetite regulation. When we consume sugary foods and drinks, our bodies may not receive the signals to stop eating, leading to overeating and weight gain, another risk factor for metabolic syndrome.
  1. The excessive consumption of sugar can have far-reaching effects on our metabolism, increasing the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and its associated health complications. By reducing our intake of added sugars and opting for whole, nutrient-dense foods instead, we can improve our metabolic health and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
