Awakening to the true nature of reality is the goal of mindfulness practice from "summary" of Waking Up by Sam Harris
The goal of mindfulness practice is to awaken to the true nature of reality. This may sound like a lofty ambition, but it is actually quite practical. When we pay attention to our moment-to-moment experience with clarity and openness, we begin to see things as they truly are. We see that our thoughts, emotions, and sensations are constantly changing, arising and passing away in the field of awareness. We see that there is no fixed self at the center of this experience, no "I" that is in control of everything. Rather, there is just a flow of phenomena, unfolding according to its own laws. This insight can be profoundly liberating. When we stop identifying with our thoughts and emotions, we no longer suffer from them in the same way. We see that they are not who we are, that they are just passing events in the mind. This realization allows us to break free from the cycle of craving and aversion that keeps us trapped in suffering. We can learn to relate to our experience with equanimity, accepting things as they are without grasping or pushing them away. Mindfulness practice is not about trying to achieve some special state of consciousness. It is about learning to be fully present with whatever is arising in the present moment. This includes both pleasant and unpleasant experiences, as well as neutral ones. By cultivating this kind of nonjudgmental awareness, we can begin to see through the illusion of separateness that causes so much of our mental anguish. We can start to appreciate the interconnectedness of all things, the fact that we are not separate individuals but part of a larger whole.- Awakening to the true nature of reality is about seeing things as they are and living in accordance with that understanding. It is about letting go of our illusions and delusions, our hopes and fears, and coming into direct contact with the rawness of experience. This is not always easy, but it is immensely rewarding. It allows us to live more fully, more authentically, and more compassionately. It is a journey worth taking, a path that leads to greater clarity, wisdom, and freedom.
