When we are in the depths of depression, it can be all too easy to fall into a pattern of self-criticism and self-judgment. We may berate ourselves for not being able to function as we used to, for not being able to find joy in the things that once brought us pleasure. This constant inner dialogue of negativity only serves to deepen our feelings of worthlessness and despair. However, embracing self-compassion offers a way out of this destructive cycle. Self-compassion involves treating ourselves with the same kindness and understanding that we would offer to a friend in need. It means recognizing that we are human, and therefore imperfect, and that it is okay to struggle. By cultivating self-compassion, we can begin to counteract the harsh self-criticism that fuels our depression. Instead of beating ourselves up for our perceived failings, we can offer ourselves words of comfort and encouragement.
