Digestive health is essential for nutrient absorption from "summary" of Staying Healthy with Nutrition, rev by Elson Haas,Buck Levin

Proper digestion is a crucial process in the body that allows us to break down and absorb essential nutrients from the foods we eat. Without efficient digestion, our bodies cannot effectively extract the vitamins, minerals, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates needed for optimal health and well-being. The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and transported to cells throughout the body. This process begins in the mouth, where enzymes in saliva start to break down carbohydrates. As food moves through the digestive tract, it is further broken down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes produced by the pancreas and small intestine. In order for nutrients to be properly absorbed, the lining of the intestines must be healthy and functioning optimally. The small intestine is lined with tiny finger-like projections called villi, which increase the surface area available for nutrient absorption. These villi are covered with even smaller hair-like structures called microvilli, which further enhance nutrient absorption. A healthy balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut is also essential for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. These friendly bacteria help to break down food, produce certain vitamins, and protect against harmful pathogens. When the balance of gut bacteria is disrupted, it can lead to digestive issues such as bloating, gas, constipation, or diarrhea, which can interfere with nutrient absorption.
  1. Digestive health plays a critical role in nutrient absorption and overall health. By supporting the digestive system through a healthy diet, adequate hydration, regular physical activity, and stress management, we can help ensure that our bodies are able to effectively extract the nutrients needed to thrive.
