Protein purification techniques are essential for isolating a protein of interest from a complex mixture of biomolecules. Various types of chromatography, such as ion exchange, affinity, size exclusion, and hydrophobic interaction chromatography, can be used depending on the specific characteristics of the protein being purified. Electrophoresis is another important technique for protein purification, as it allows for the separation of proteins based on their size and charge. In particular, sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) is commonly used to separate proteins based on their molecular weight. Finally, protein precipitation can be used to selectively precipitate the protein of interest from the crude extract. This can be achieved by adding a precipitating agent such as ammonium sulfate, or by changing the pH or ionic strength of the solution.
