Eating mindfully improves digestion from "summary" of Ayurvedic Cooking for Self-healing by Usha Lad,Vasant Lad
When we eat mindfully, we are fully present and aware of each bite we take. This means we are not distracted by television, phones, or other activities while eating. Instead, we focus on the taste, texture, and aroma of our food. By doing so, we can better appreciate the nourishment we are receiving from our meal. Digestion begins in the mind, as the sight and smell of food trigger the release of digestive enzymes and juices. When we eat mindfully, we engage all our senses in the process of eating. This helps to stimulate the digestive fire, or Agni, which is essential for proper digestion. When Agni is strong, it can break down food efficiently and extract the nutrients our body needs. Additionally, eating mindfully helps us to chew our food more thoroughly. Chewing is an important part of digestion, as it breaks down food into smaller particles that are easier for the body to digest. When we rush through our meals or eat on the go, we are more likely to swallow large pieces of food that can put a strain on our digestive system. Furthermore, eating mindfully can help to reduce stress, which is known to impair digestion. When we are stressed, our body goes into fight or flight mode, which can slow down the digestive process. By taking the time to eat slowly and mindfully, we can signal to our body that it is safe to relax and digest our food properly.- Digestion is considered the cornerstone of health. When our digestion is strong, we are able to assimilate nutrients more effectively and eliminate waste efficiently. By eating mindfully, we can support our digestive system and promote overall well-being. So, next time you sit down for a meal, try to eat slowly, savoring each bite, and see how it can improve your digestion.
