Sleep impacts our decisionmaking and problem-solving abilities from "summary" of Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

Sleep is not a passive state of unconsciousness. While we sleep, our brains are actively engaged in a complex process of memory consolidation and information processing. This process is crucial for our decision-making and problem-solving abilities when we are awake. When we do not get enough sleep, these cognitive functions suffer, impairing our ability to make sound judgments and find effective solutions to problems. During the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep, our brains are busy organizing memories and making connections between different pieces of information. This process is essential for learning and creativity. When we cut short our REM sleep by staying up late or waking up too early, we deprive our brains of the opportunity to perform these vital tasks. As a result, our decision-making abilities become compromised, and we struggle to come up with innovative solutions to challenges. In addition to REM sleep, deep non-REM sleep plays a crucial role in our cognitive functions. During this stage, our brains are busy clearing out toxins and waste products that accumulate during the day. This cleansing process is essential for maintaining the health of our brain cells and ensuring optimal cognitive performance. When we do not get enough deep sleep, these toxins build up, leading to impaired decision-making and problem-solving abilities. Furthermore, sleep deprivation affects the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for higher-level executive functions such as decision-making, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. When we are sleep-deprived, this region of the brain becomes less active, making it harder for us to control our impulses and make rational choices. This can have serious consequences for our ability to navigate complex situations and make informed decisions.
  1. Sleep is not a luxury but a biological necessity that is essential for our cognitive functions. When we prioritize sleep and give our brains the rest they need, we are better equipped to make sound judgments and find effective solutions to the challenges we face. On the other hand, when we deprive ourselves of sleep, we compromise our decision-making and problem-solving abilities, putting ourselves at a disadvantage in both our personal and professional lives.
