Stress, by its very nature, implies a threat to one’s well-being, whether real or perceived. When we feel stressed, the brain sends out signals to the body to prepare for fight or flight. This response is adaptive in the short term, helping us deal with immediate danger. However, prolonged stress can have detrimental effects on the immune system. The stress response involves the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol and adrenaline, which can suppress the immune system. These hormones serve to mobilize the body’s resources for dealing with the perceived threat, diverting energy away from immune function.
