Dietary sources of vitamin D are limited from "summary" of The Vitamin D Solution by Michael F. Holick Ph.D., M.D.

It is important to understand that the dietary sources of vitamin D are limited. While some foods such as fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines contain small amounts of vitamin D, it is difficult to obtain enough of this essential nutrient through diet alone. In fact, it is nearly impossible to get adequate amounts of vitamin D from food sources alone. This is due to the fact that there are very few foods that naturally contain vitamin D. While some foods like milk and orange juice are fortified with vitamin D, the amounts added are typically not enough to meet our daily needs. In addition, many people may not consume enough of these fortified foods on a regular basis to make a significant impact on their vitamin D levels. Furthermore, factors such as age, skin color, geographical location, and sun exposure can all impact the body's ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight. For example, individuals with darker skin require more sun exposure to produce the same amount of vitamin D as those with lighter skin. Similarly, people who live in northern latitudes or areas with limited sunlight may struggle to get enough vitamin D from the sun alone.
  1. It is often recommended to supplement with vitamin D in order to maintain optimal levels. This is especially important for those who are at risk of deficiency, such as older adults, people with darker skin, individuals who are overweight, and those who have limited sun exposure. By understanding the limited dietary sources of vitamin D, we can take proactive steps to ensure we are getting enough of this crucial nutrient to support overall health and well-being.
