We can learn to respond to stress differently from "summary" of The Mindful Way Through Stress by Shamash Alidina

When faced with stress, our automatic response is often to react in ways that may not be helpful. These reactions can range from avoidance and denial to overthinking and catastrophic thinking. However, it is possible to change these automatic responses through mindfulness practices. By cultivating awareness of our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations, we can begin to notice the patterns of reactivity that arise in response to stress. Through mindfulness, we can learn to observe these reactions without judgment or attachment. This allows us to create space between the stimulus (stressful situation) and our response. In this space, we have the opportunity to choose how we want to react, rather than simply reacting out of habit. By bringing a sense of curiosity and openness to our experience of stress, we can develop a greater sense of self-awareness and self-regulation. Mindfulness also helps us to develop a more compassionate attitude towards ourselves. Instead of berating ourselves for feeling stressed or reacting in certain ways, we can learn to treat ourselves with kindness and understanding. This self-compassion is essential for navigating stress in a more constructive way. It allows us to acknowledge our own suffering with a sense of care and concern, rather than criticism or self-blame.
  1. Mindfulness offers us a new way of relating to stress. Instead of viewing stress as something to be avoided or conquered, we can learn to accept it as a natural part of life. By embracing the reality of stress with mindfulness, we can cultivate a greater sense of resilience and well-being. This shift in perspective empowers us to respond to stress in a more adaptive and skillful manner, rather than being at the mercy of our automatic reactions.
