Hormones control our weight and health from "summary" of The Hormone Reset Diet by Sara Gottfried, M.D.
Our hormones play a critical role in regulating our weight and overall health. They act as messengers in the body, communicating with various organs and tissues to control key functions such as metabolism, hunger, and energy levels. When our hormones are out of balance, it can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and a host of other health issues. One of the main hormones that influences our weight is insulin. This hormone is responsible for regulating blood sugar levels and storing fat in the body. When we consume high amounts of sugar and refined carbohydrates, it can cause insulin levels to spike, leading to weight gain and insulin resistance. This, in turn, can increase our risk of developing conditions like diabetes and heart disease. Another key hormone that affects our weight is cortisol, also known as the stress hormone. When we are under chronic stress, cortisol levels can become elevated, promoting the storage of fat around the abdomen. This can lead to a condition known as adrenal fatigue, where the adrenal glands become worn out from constantly producing cortisol. This can further disrupt our hormonal balance and make it difficult to lose weight. In addition to insulin and cortisol, other hormones such as leptin and ghrelin also play a role in regulating our appetite and metabolism. Leptin is responsible for signaling to the brain when we are full, while ghrelin stimulates hunger. When these hormones are imbalanced, it can lead to overeating and weight gain.- We can take steps to reset our hormonal balance and achieve our weight loss goals. This involves making dietary and lifestyle changes that support healthy hormone function, such as reducing sugar intake, managing stress levels, and getting regular exercise. By addressing the root causes of hormonal imbalance, we can improve our overall health and well-being.
