Sugar suppresses immune function from "summary" of Super Immunity by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

Consuming sugar can have a detrimental effect on our immune system. When we eat foods high in sugar, our white blood cells are less effective at fighting off harmful invaders, such as viruses and bacteria. This is because sugar can interfere with the function of these immune cells, making them less able to do their job of protecting our bodies. Furthermore, sugar can also contribute to inflammation in the body, which can further weaken our immune system. Chronic inflammation can disrupt the balance of our immune cells, leading to a state of dysregulation where our defenses are not functioning optimally. This can leave us more susceptible to infections and illnesses. In addition, sugar can suppress the production of antibodies, which are essential for recognizing and neutralizing pathogens. Without enough antibodies, our immune system may struggle to mount an effective response to infections, leaving us vulnerable to getting sick. Moreover, sugar consumption can also lead to imbalances in our gut microbiota, which play a crucial role in the functioning of our immune system. When our gut bacteria are disrupted by sugar, it can impair our immune response and make us more prone to infections.
  1. It is clear that consuming too much sugar can have a negative impact on our immune function. By reducing our intake of sugary foods and beverages, we can support our immune system and help it function optimally to protect us against illnesses and infections.
