Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on brain health from "summary" of Mente afiada by Sanjay Gupta

Chronic stress is like a slow poison for our brain. When we are constantly under stress, our brain is flooded with cortisol, the stress hormone. This excess cortisol can actually shrink the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for decision-making and memory. It can also damage the hippocampus, which is crucial for forming new memories. Moreover, chronic stress can lead to inflammation in the brain. This inflammation can disrupt the communication between brain cells, leading to cognitive impairment. It can also contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Not only does chronic stress affect the structure of the brain, but it also affects its function. When we are stressed, our brain goes into "fight or flight" mode, focusing all its resources on survival. This means that other important functions, such as digestion and immune response, are put on hold. Over time, this can take a toll on our overall brain health. Furthermore, chronic stress can disrupt the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain. For example, it can decrease the levels of serotonin, the "feel-good" neurotransmitter. This can lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety, further impacting our brain health.
  1. Chronic stress is not just a mental health issue - it can have serious consequences for our brain health as well. By managing stress through techniques such as meditation, exercise, and social support, we can protect our brains from the damaging effects of chronic stress.
