Utilize grounding techniques during overwhelming moments from "summary" of Kids' Guide to Staying Awesome and in Control by Lauren Brukner

When you're feeling really overwhelmed, it can be hard to know what to do. Your mind might be racing with thoughts and your body might feel like it's going a hundred miles an hour. This is when grounding techniques can come in handy. Grounding techniques are like an anchor that can help you feel more centered and calm when you're feeling out of control. They can bring you back to the present moment and help you feel more in touch with your body and surroundings. One grounding technique you can try is called the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise. This involves using your five senses to focus on your surroundings. Start by naming five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This exercise can help you shift your focus away from your overwhelming thoughts and bring you back to the present moment. Another grounding technique you can use is deep breathing. When you're feeling overwhelmed, your breathing might become shallow and quick. Taking deep, slow breaths can help calm your nervous system and bring your body back to a state of relaxation. You can try breathing in slowly through your nose for a count of four, holding your breath for a count of four, and then exhaling slowly through your mouth for a count of four. Visualization is another grounding technique that can be helpful during overwhelming moments. You can imagine yourself in a calm and peaceful place, such as a beach or a forest. Picture yourself surrounded by nature and focus on the sights, sounds, and smells of this place. This can help you feel more relaxed and centered, even when you're feeling stressed.
  1. Grounding techniques can be a powerful tool to help you stay calm and in control during overwhelming moments. By using techniques like the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise, deep breathing, and visualization, you can bring yourself back to the present moment and feel more grounded. So, next time you're feeling overwhelmed, give these techniques a try and see how they can help you feel more centered and in control.
