Get your nutrients from food, not supplements from "summary" of In Defence of Food by Michael Pollan
The idea that we should be getting our nutrients from food rather than supplements may seem obvious, yet it is one that is often overlooked in today's world of quick fixes and convenience. In our quest for health and longevity, we have been led to believe that popping a pill or powder can provide us with the nutrients we need to thrive. However, this approach ignores the complex interactions that occur within whole foods - interactions that cannot be replicated in a laboratory or encapsulated in a pill. Whole foods contain a vast array of nutrients, many of which have yet to be identified or understood by science. These nutrients work together in harmony, each one enhancing the absorption and utilization of the others. When we isolate a single nutrient and put it into a pill, we disrupt this delicate balance, potentially causing harm rather than good. Furthermore, the nutrients found in whole foods are often more bioavailable than those found in supplements. Our bodies are designed to extract nutrients from food, breaking them down and absorbing them in a way that is tailored to our individual needs. When we bypass this natural process by taking supplements, we run the risk of overwhelming our bodies with nutrients they may not be able to process or use effectively. In addition, whole foods provide us with more than just nutrients - they also contain fiber, antioxidants, and other compounds that are essential for good health. These compounds work in concert with the nutrients in our food, offering protection against disease and promoting overall well-being. Supplements, on the other hand, lack these essential components, leaving us vulnerable to the negative effects of nutrient imbalances.- The best way to ensure that we are getting the nutrients we need is to focus on eating a diverse and balanced diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods. By doing so, we can take advantage of the synergistic effects of the nutrients and compounds found in these foods, supporting our health and vitality in a way that no supplement ever could.
