Don't fear fats, embrace the good ones from "summary" of In Defence of Food by Michael Pollan

Fats have long been demonized in our culture, portrayed as the enemy when it comes to our health. However, not all fats are created equal. In fact, there are "good" fats that are essential for our well-being. These good fats can be found in foods like avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. They play a crucial role in our body's functioning and should not be feared. Many of us have been conditioned to opt for low-fat or fat-free products, thinking that they are the healthier choice. However, these products often contain added sugars and other artificial ingredients to make up for the lack of fat, making them less nutritious overall. It is important to understand that our bodies need fat to function properly, and choosing the right kinds of fats is key. The good fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids, are known for their heart-healthy benefits. They can help reduce inflammation, lower cholesterol levels, and improve overall cardiovascular health. By incorporating foods rich in these good fats into our diet, we can support our body's natural processes and promote optimal well-being. In contrast, unhealthy fats like trans fats and saturated fats can have negative effects on our health. These fats are often found in processed foods, fast food, and baked goods. Consuming too much of these fats can contribute to various health issues, including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. It is important to limit our intake of these fats and focus on consuming more of the good fats instead.
  1. We can make better choices for our health. Instead of avoiding fat altogether, we should focus on incorporating whole, nutrient-dense foods that provide us with the essential fats our bodies need to thrive. Making this simple yet powerful shift can have a profound impact on our overall well-being and help us lead a healthier, more balanced life.
