Chronic inflammation is detrimental to brain health from "summary" of Brain Food by Lorraine Perretta,Oona van den Berg

Chronic inflammation is like a slow-burning fire in the body, causing damage over time. It is the kind of inflammation that lingers, persisting for weeks, months, or even years. This chronic state of inflammation can wreak havoc on our brain health. When our body is in a constant state of inflammation, it can have negative effects on the brain. Inflammation triggers the release of cytokines, which are proteins that regulate inflammation. However, when there is chronic inflammation, the constant presence of these cytokines can lead to problems. One of the key issues with chronic inflammation is that it can impair the blood-brain barrier. This barrier is like a gatekeeper, regulating what can enter and exit the brain. When it becomes compromised due to chronic inflammation, harmful substances can leak into the brain, causing damage. Furthermore, chronic inflammation can lead to the production of free radicals. These are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress in the brain. This oxidative stress can damage brain cells and impair cognitive function. In addition, chronic inflammation has been linked to neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. The constant activation of inflammatory pathways in the brain can contribute to the development and progression of these diseases.
  1. Chronic inflammation is a silent threat to our brain health. It can slowly chip away at our cognitive function, impair our memory, and increase our risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases. It is crucial to address inflammation in order to protect and preserve our brain health.
