Let go of attachment to outcomes from "summary" of Being Zen by Ezra Bayda
The idea of releasing attachment to outcomes is at the heart of Zen practice. When we are attached to how things should be, we are setting ourselves up for suffering. This attachment can come from a deep-rooted need for control or a fear of the unknown. We may believe that if we can just manipulate the circumstances in our favor, we will be happy and secure. However, this is a false belief. Life is constantly changing and evolving, and no amount of attachment can prevent this natural process from unfolding. When we cling to a desired outcome, we are essentially fighting against the flow of life. This resistance only leads to frustration, disappointment, and ultimately, more suffering. To let go of attachment to outcomes means to surrender our need to control and manipulate the world around us. It means accepting things as they are, without judgment or resistance. This does not mean that we become passive or indifferent. Rather, it means that we engage with life fully, while also recognizing that we cannot always dictate the results. In Zen practice, we learn to cultivate a sense of openness and curiosity towards whatever arises, without getting caught up in our desires or expectations. We begin to see that there is beauty and wisdom in every moment, regardless of whether it aligns with our plans or preferences.- We free ourselves from the burden of constantly trying to mold reality to fit our desires. We can relax into the present moment and trust that whatever unfolds is ultimately for our highest good. This practice of letting go allows us to experience a deep sense of peace and contentment, no matter what life brings our way.
