Sleep quality is just as important as sleep quantity from "summary" of Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker

Sleep is not just a state of unconsciousness that we pass through each night. It is a complex biological process that plays a critical role in our health and well-being. One of the common misconceptions about sleep is that the quantity of sleep we get is all that matters. However, the quality of our sleep is equally important. When we talk about sleep quantity, we are referring to the number of hours we spend asleep each night. This is important because our bodies and brains need a certain amount of rest to function optimally. However, the hours we spend in bed do not always equate to the amount of restorative sleep we are getting. Quality of sleep refers to the depth and efficiency of our rest. It is during the deep stages of sleep that our bodies repair themselves, consolidate memories, and regulate emotions. Poor sleep quality can have serious consequences for our physical and mental health. It can impair our immune function, increase our risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, and affect our cognitive abilities. Inadequate sleep quality has also been linked to mood disorders such as depression and anxiety. Improving sleep quality involves creating an environment that is conducive to restful sleep, practicing good sleep hygiene habits, and addressing any underlying sleep disorders. By focusing on both the quantity and quality of our sleep, we can ensure that we are giving our bodies and brains the rest they need to function at their best.
  1. It is essential to recognize that sleep quality is just as important as sleep quantity. By prioritizing both aspects of our sleep, we can support our overall health and well-being.
