When we take the time to truly understand how trauma has shaped our lives, we begin to see ourselves in a new light. We start to recognize why we react the way we do, why certain triggers set us off, and why we struggle with certain emotions. This understanding allows us to accept ourselves more fully, knowing that our behaviors and feelings are not random or illogical. They are rooted in our past experiences, in the ways we have been hurt and affected by the world around us. By acknowledging the ways in which trauma has impacted us, we can let go of the shame and blame that often accompany our struggles. We can see ourselves with compassion, knowing that we have endured pain and suffering that has left a mark on us. This self-acceptance is not about excusing harmful behavior or avoiding responsibility. It is about recognizing that our responses to trauma are normal reactions to abnormal circumstances.
