Practice relaxation techniques from "summary" of Unfuck Your Brain by Faith G. Harper, PhD, LPC-S, ACS, ACN

Relaxation techniques are a crucial part of managing anxiety and stress. When you're in a state of high anxiety, your body and brain are on high alert, ready to fight or flee at a moment's notice. But if this state continues for too long, it can wear you down physically and mentally. Practicing relaxation techniques helps to activate your body's relaxation response, which is the opposite of the stress response. By deliberately engaging in activities that promote relaxation, you can help calm your nervous system and give your body a chance to rest and recover. There are many different relaxation techniques you can try, such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, visualization, or mindfulness meditation. The key is to find a technique that works for you and to practice it regularly. Deep breathing is a simple yet effective relaxation technique that you can do anywhere, at any time. Start by finding a comfortable position and taking a slow, deep breath in through your nose, filling your lungs with air. Hold the breath for a few seconds, then slowly exhale through your mouth. Repeat this process several times, focusing on the sensation of the breath entering and leaving your body. Progressive muscle relaxation involves systematically tensing and then relaxing different muscle groups in your body. This technique can help release physical tension and promote a sense of calm and relaxation. Visualization is a technique where you mentally imagine a peaceful and calming scene, such as a beach or a meadow. By focusing on this mental image, you can help distract your mind from anxious thoughts and promote a sense of relaxation. Mindfulness meditation involves focusing on the present moment and observing your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This practice can help you develop a greater sense of awareness and acceptance, which can reduce overall stress and anxiety levels.
  1. Practicing relaxation techniques can be a powerful tool in managing anxiety and stress. By incorporating these techniques into your daily routine, you can help create a sense of calm and balance in your life.
