Sunscreen is designed to protect our skin from harmful UV rays, but it can also block the production of vitamin D. When we apply sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30, for example, we can reduce the production of vitamin D by about 95%. This is because sunscreen blocks the UVB rays that are needed for our bodies to make vitamin D. In order to get enough vitamin D, it is important to balance sun protection with sun exposure. While it is crucial to protect our skin from sunburn and skin cancer, it is also essential to allow our bodies to produce an adequate amount of vitamin D. This can be achieved by spending some time in the sun without sunscreen before applying it or by taking a vitamin D supplement. There are other factors that can affect the production of vitamin D as well, such as the time of day, the season, and our location. In general, the sun is most effective at producing vitamin D between 10 a. m. and 3 p. m. during the spring, summer, and fall months.
