Willpower is a limited resource that can be depleted from "summary" of The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life & Business by Charles Duhigg

In one experiment, participants were asked to watch a sad movie while resisting the urge to eat freshly baked chocolate chip cookies placed in front of them. The researchers found that those who exerted willpower to resist the cookies were less able to persist in solving complicated puzzles afterward. This suggests that willpower is a limited resource that can be depleted. Moreover, studies have shown that willpower operates like a muscle. Just as muscles can become tired and less effective after repeated use, willpower can also be exhausted with continuous use. When people are under stress or feeling overwhelmed, their willpower reserves can be quickly depleted. This may explain why individuals tend to make poor decisions or give in to temptation when they are under pressure. Interestingly, research has also revealed that willpower can be strengthened over time through practice and repetition. By consistently challenging oneself to exert self-control in small ways, individuals can increase their overall willpower reserves. This can help them resist temptations and make better choices in the long run. Understanding that willpower is a finite resource can be empowering. By recognizing when our willpower is running low, we can take proactive steps to replenish it, such as getting enough rest, eating nutritious foods, and engaging in activities that bring us joy. This knowledge can help us better manage our impulses and stay on track with our goals.
