A plantbased diet may not be optimal for everyone from "summary" of The Plant Paradox by Dr. Steven R. Gundry,MD

It's tempting to believe that a plant-based diet is the key to optimal health for everyone. After all, plants are packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are essential for our well-being. However, as I've discovered through my research and clinical experience, this is not always the case. In fact, for some people, a plant-based diet can actually do more harm than good. The truth is, not all plants are created equal. While some are indeed nutrient-dense and beneficial for our health, others contain compounds known as lectins that can wreak havoc on our bodies. Lectins are proteins that plants use as a defense mechanism against predators. When we consume lectins, they can bind to the cells lining our gut and disrupt our digestive system, leading to inflammation, autoimmune reactions, and a host of other health issues. Certain individuals are more sensitive to lectins than others. Factors such as genetics, gut health, and immune function can all play a role in determining how well someone tolerates these plant proteins. For those who are particularly sensitive to lectins, a plant-based diet can exacerbate existing health problems and prevent them from reaching their full potential. This is not to say that everyone should avoid plants altogether. In fact, many people can thrive on a diet that includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. The key is to choose plant foods that are low in lectins and to prepare them in a way that reduces their lectin content. For example, soaking, sprouting, and fermenting can all help to neutralize lectins and make plant foods more digestible.
  1. The best diet is one that is tailored to the individual. What works for one person may not work for another. By paying attention to how your body responds to different foods and making informed choices based on your unique needs, you can find the optimal diet for your health and well-being.
