Understanding the root cause of obesity is crucial for treatment from "summary" of The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung

Obesity is a complex and multifaceted issue that cannot be adequately addressed without understanding its root cause. Many people believe that obesity is simply a matter of consuming too many calories and not exercising enough. However, this oversimplified view fails to take into account the underlying hormonal imbalance that drives weight gain. Insulin, a key hormone in the regulation of blood sugar, plays a crucial role in the development of obesity. When we consume carbohydrates, our bodies release insulin to help transport glucose into our cells for energy. However, over time, excessive consumption of refined carbohydrates can lead to insulin resistance, where our cells become less responsive to the hormone's signals. As a result, our bodies produce even more insulin to compensate, leading to a vicious cycle of increasing insulin levels and further weight gain. This hormonal imbalance disrupts our body's natural mechanisms for regulating weight, making it difficult to lose weight through traditional means of diet and exercise. In order to effectively treat obesity, it is essential to address the underlying hormonal dysregulation that drives weight gain. By reducing our consumption of refined carbohydrates and adopting a low-carb, high-fat diet, we can lower insulin levels and allow our bodies to tap into stored fat for energy. Additionally, intermittent fasting can help to further lower insulin levels and promote weight loss.
  1. We can achieve long-lasting results and improve overall health. It is not simply a matter of eating less and moving more; rather, it is about restoring hormonal balance and allowing our bodies to function as they were designed to.
