Obesity is not caused by overeating alone from "summary" of The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung

The idea that obesity is solely the result of overeating is a common misconception in society today. While it is true that consuming excess calories can lead to weight gain, this oversimplified view ignores the complex interplay of factors that contribute to obesity. In reality, obesity is a multifaceted condition that is influenced by a variety of genetic, environmental, and hormonal factors. One of the key factors in the development of obesity is insulin resistance, a condition in which the body's cells become less responsive to the effects of insulin. Insulin is a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels and energy storage. When the body becomes resistant to insulin, it can lead to high levels of circulating insulin, which promotes the storage of fat in adipose tissue. Furthermore, hormonal imbalances, such as elevated levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) or disturbances in the production of leptin (the satiety hormone), can also contribute to weight gain and obesity. These hormonal disruptions can disrupt the body's natural hunger and satiety signals, leading to overeating and weight gain. In addition to hormonal factors, environmental influences also play a significant role in the development of obesity. Factors such as easy access to high-calorie, processed foods, sedentary lifestyles, and chronic stress can all contribute to weight gain. These environmental factors can make it difficult for individuals to maintain a healthy weight, even if they are not overeating in terms of total calories consumed.
  1. We can develop more effective strategies for weight management and improve overall health outcomes. By addressing the root causes of obesity, rather than simply focusing on calorie restriction, we can help individuals achieve long-term success in managing their weight and improving their overall health.
