Acceptance of difficult emotions is part of the mindfulness practice from "summary" of The Now Effect by Elisha Goldstein
When we engage in the practice of mindfulness, we are not only cultivating awareness of the present moment but also learning to accept whatever arises within us. This includes difficult emotions that may be uncomfortable or challenging to experience. Rather than pushing these emotions away or trying to avoid them, mindfulness invites us to acknowledge them with an open and compassionate attitude. By accepting difficult emotions as part of our present experience, we are acknowledging the reality of our internal landscape without judgment or resistance. This acceptance allows us to observe these emotions with curiosity and kindness, rather than getting caught up in a cycle of reactivity or suppression. In doing so, we create space for these emotions to be seen, felt, and eventually released. When we resist difficult emotions, we inadvertently give them more power over us. This resistance can manifest in various ways, such as rumination, avoidance, or numbing behaviors. However, by practicing acceptance through mindfulness, we learn to relate to our emotions in a different way – one that is grounded in presence and self-compassion. It's important to note that accepting difficult emotions does not mean we have to like or condone them. Rather, it is about recognizing their presence without becoming entangled in their stories or triggers. This awareness allows us to respond to our emotions with greater clarity and wisdom, rather than reacting impulsively or habitually.- The practice of mindfulness teaches us to embrace the full spectrum of human experience, including the highs and lows of our emotional landscape. By cultivating acceptance of difficult emotions, we can cultivate resilience, insight, and inner peace in the face of life's inevitable challenges.
