Recognize when you are eating out of habit from "summary" of The Mindful Diet by Ruth Wolever PhD,Beth Reardon MS,RD,LDN,Tania Hannan
Eating out of habit is something many of us do without even realizing it. We may find ourselves reaching for a snack or grabbing a second helping simply because it's what we always do, not because we are truly hungry. This mindless eating can lead to mindless weight gain and can sabotage our efforts to eat healthily. Recognizing when we are eating out of habit is the first step towards breaking this cycle. Pay attention to your body and your mind as you eat. Are you truly hungry, or are you eating simply because it's habit? By becoming more aware of our eating habits, we can begin to make more conscious choices about what, when, and how much we eat. One way to break the habit of mindless eating is to introduce more mindfulness into our daily eating routines. Mindful eating involves paying full attention to the experience of eating – the taste, texture, and smell of our food, as well as our own thoughts and feelings as we eat. By bringing mindfulness to our meals, we can become more attuned to our bodies' signals of hunger and fullness, and can begin to break the cycle of habit-driven eating. Another strategy for breaking the habit of mindless eating is to introduce more variety into our meals. When we eat the same things day in and day out, we are more likely to eat out of habit rather than true hunger. By trying new foods and new recipes, we can shake up our eating routines and become more conscious of what and when we are eating. Breaking the habit of mindless eating takes time and practice, but it is possible. By paying attention to our bodies and our minds as we eat, introducing more mindfulness into our meals, and varying our eating routines, we can begin to break the cycle of habit-driven eating and make more conscious choices about our diet and our health.Similar Posts
