Rewards help reinforce new habits from "summary" of The Habit by Susan Morse

Rewards play a crucial role in the process of establishing new habits. When we receive a reward for performing a particular behavior, our brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reinforcement. This dopamine release strengthens the neural pathways associated with the habit, making it more likely that we will repeat the behavior in the future. In essence, rewards act as a signal to our brain that the behavior we just performed is worth remembering and repeating. This reinforcement mechanism is crucial in the early stages of habit formation when the habit is not yet automatic. By associating the behavior with a reward, we make it more likely that the habit will become ingrained over time.
