Eating in response to cues becomes automatic from "summary" of The End of Overeating by David A. Kessler

When we repeatedly eat in response to the same cues, our brains begin to anticipate the reward that comes with that behavior. Over time, the connection between the cue and the reward becomes automatic, almost like a reflex. We no longer have to consciously think about whether or not to eat when we encounter those familiar cues; the decision has already been made for us by our brain's reward system. This automatic response to cues can be dangerous when those cues are associated with highly palatable foods that are designed to be irresistible. When we are constantly bombarded with cues that trigger our desire to eat, it becomes very difficult to resist the urge to indulge. Our brains have been hijacked by the food industry, which has carefully crafted products that are specifically designed to activate our brain's reward system and keep us coming back for more. The more we give in to these automatic responses to cues, the stronger they become. It's a vicious cycle that can be incredibly difficult to break. We find ourselves mindlessly eating in response to cues that we may not even be consciously aware of, leading to overeating and weight gain.
  1. We can regain control over our food choices and ultimately break free from the cycle of overeating.
