Insulin resistance is the root cause of type 2 diabetes from "summary" of The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung

Insulin resistance is like a key that no longer fits properly into the lock. This condition occurs when our cells become resistant to the effects of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas to regulate blood sugar levels. When insulin resistance takes hold, the pancreas responds by producing even more insulin in an attempt to force glucose into the cells. This excess insulin does manage to lower blood sugar levels temporarily, but it also comes with a host of negative side effects. The constant presence of high insulin levels can lead to weight gain, high blood pressure, and inflammation - all of which are risk factors for type 2 diabetes. Over time, the cells become overwhelmed by the constant bombardment of insulin, and they start to shut down their insulin receptors. This leads to a vicious cycle where more and more insulin is needed to achieve the same effect. Eventually, the pancreas can no longer keep up with the demand, and blood sugar levels start to rise. As blood sugar levels continue to climb, the body becomes less able to utilize glucose for energy. Instead, the excess sugar gets converted into fat, leading to weight gain and further exacerbating insulin resistance. This creates a dangerous feedback loop that can ultimately result in the development of type 2 diabetes. By addressing the root cause of insulin resistance through dietary changes, intermittent fasting, and other lifestyle modifications, it is possible to reverse the progression of type 2 diabetes. This approach focuses on reducing insulin levels, allowing the cells to become more sensitive to its effects once again. Through these interventions, it is possible to break free from the cycle of insulin resistance and regain control over blood sugar levels.
