Mindfulness helps in overcoming suffering from "summary" of THE BOOK OF BUDDHA by Arundhati Subramaniam

The Buddha taught that suffering is an intrinsic part of human existence. It is the First Noble Truth. We cannot avoid pain, illness, loss, or death. These are inevitable aspects of life. However, the Buddha also taught that suffering can be overcome. How? By cultivating mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the moment, without judgment or attachment. It is about observing our thoughts, emotions, and sensations with clarity and awareness. When we are mindful, we can see suffering for what it truly is: impermanent and ultimately illusory. When we are caught up in our thoughts and emotions, we tend to magnify our suffering. We get lost in our fears, desires, and worries. But when we practice mindfulness, we can step back and see things as they really are. We can observe our suffering without getting swept away by it. Mindfulness allows us to break free from the cycle of suffering. By being fully present in the moment, we can let go of our attachments and aversions. We can see that our suffering is not permanent, that it arises and passes away like everything else. When we cultivate mindfulness, we also develop compassion and wisdom. We learn to be kinder to ourselves and others. We see that we are all interconnected, that our suffering is not separate from the suffering of others. This understanding can bring great relief and healing.
  1. Mindfulness helps us to transform our suffering. Instead of being overwhelmed by it, we can learn to see it as a teacher. We can use our pain and difficulties as opportunities for growth and self-discovery. Through mindfulness, we can find peace and liberation from suffering.
