Respiration releases energy from glucose molecules from "summary" of NCERT Solutions - Biology for Class 12th by Dr. Madhurbhashini,Sargam Hans,Shanya Hans
Respiration is a vital process that occurs in living organisms to obtain energy. The process involves the breakdown of glucose molecules to release energy. Glucose is a simple sugar that serves as the primary source of energy for cells. During respiration, glucose molecules are broken down in the presence of oxygen to produce energy in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). The process of respiration can be divided into two main types: aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen and is the most efficient way of releasing energy from glucose molecules. Anaerobic respiration, on the other hand, occurs in the absence of oxygen and is less efficient than aerobic respiration. In aerobic respiration, glucose molecules are first broken down into smaller molecules through a series of biochemical reactions. These reactions take place in the mitochondria of the cell, which is known as the powerhouse of the cell. The breakdown of glucose molecules releases energy that is stored in the form of ATP. This energy is then utilized by the cell for various cellular processes. On the other hand, anaerobic respiration occurs when oxygen is not available for the cell. In this process, glucose molecules are partially broken down to release energy. However, anaerobic respiration is less efficient than aerobic respiration and produces lactic acid or ethanol as byproducts.- Respiration is a crucial process that releases energy from glucose molecules. Aerobic respiration is the most efficient way of obtaining energy, while anaerobic respiration is a less efficient alternative when oxygen is not available. The energy released during respiration is essential for the survival and functioning of living organisms.
