Cultivating selfcompassion is important in our self-discipline journey from "summary" of Mindful Self-Discipline by Giovanni Dienstmann

When we embark on the journey of self-discipline, it is easy to be hard on ourselves when we fall short of our expectations. We may berate ourselves for not being disciplined enough, for lacking willpower, or for making mistakes along the way. However, this harsh self-criticism only serves to demotivate us and erode our self-confidence. It creates a negative cycle that makes it even harder to stay disciplined. Cultivating self-compassion is essential in our self-discipline journey because it allows us to treat ourselves with kindness and understanding. Instead of beating ourselves up when we slip up, self-compassion encourages us to acknowledge our mistakes with self-forgiveness and a sense of common humanity. We all make mistakes, and it is natural to have setbacks on the path to self-discipline. By practicing self-compassion, we learn to be gentle with ourselves and to approach our journey with a sense of patience and acceptance. This does not mean that we excuse our mistakes or lower our standards. Rather, it means that we treat ourselves with the same compassion and understanding that we would offer to a friend who is struggling. This shift in perspective can be transformative in our self-discipline journey. Self-compassion also helps us to stay motivated and resilient in the face of challenges. When we are kind to ourselves, we are more likely to pick ourselves up after a setback and to keep moving forward. We develop a sense of inner strength and perseverance that allows us to stay focused on our goals, even when the going gets tough.
  1. Self-compassion is the fuel that sustains our self-discipline journey. It is the foundation upon which we can build a strong and resilient mindset that will carry us through the inevitable ups and downs of the path. By cultivating self-compassion, we create a supportive and nurturing environment within ourselves that empowers us to stay disciplined and to reach our full potential.
