Sugar is the enemy from "summary" of Food - WTF - Should I Eat? by Mark Hyman

Sugar is the enemy. It lurks in many of the foods we eat, hiding under names like high fructose corn syrup, dextrose, and sucrose. It is addictive, causing spikes and crashes in energy levels that leave us craving more. But beyond just being bad for our waistlines, sugar poses serious risks to our health. It has been linked to a range of chronic diseases, including diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. When we consume sugar, our bodies release insulin to help regulate our blood sugar levels. Over time, however, this constant influx of sugar can lead to insulin resistance, a condition in which the body's cells stop responding to insulin properly. This can eventually lead to type 2 diabetes, a serious and potentially life-threatening disease. But the dangers of sugar don't stop there. Sugar also promotes inflammation in the body, a key driver of many chronic diseases. It can cause damage to our cells and tissues, leading to accelerated aging and an increased risk of conditions like arthritis and Alzheimer's disease. In addition, sugar has been shown to negatively impact our mood and cognitive function, contributing to conditions like depression and cognitive decline. Despite these risks, sugar continues to be a staple in many people's diets. It is cheap, readily available, and highly palatable, making it difficult to avoid. But with a little effort and awareness, we can take steps to reduce our sugar intake and improve our health. By reading labels, cooking at home, and choosing whole, unprocessed foods, we can begin to break free from our sugar addiction and reclaim our health. It won't be easy, but the benefits are more than worth it. Your body will thank you.
