Protein is important from "summary" of Food - WTF - Should I Eat? by Mark Hyman

Protein is crucial for our health and well-being. It plays a vital role in nearly every function of our bodies, from building and repairing tissues to supporting immune function and hormone production. Without enough protein, our bodies simply cannot function properly. Protein is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks of life. There are twenty different amino acids, nine of which are considered essential because our bodies cannot produce them on their own – we must get them from our diet. This is why it's so important to consume high-quality sources of protein regularly. When we eat protein-rich foods, our bodies break down the protein into its amino acid components, which are then used to build and repair tissues throughout the body. This is essential for maintaining muscle mass, supporting healthy skin, hair, and nails, and even aiding in proper brain function. In addition to its role in tissue repair and maintenance, protein is also incredibly satiating. This means that when we consume protein-rich foods, we tend to feel fuller for longer periods of time, which can help to prevent overeating and support healthy weight management. Not all protein sources are created equal, however. It's important to choose high-quality, nutrient-dense sources of protein, such as wild-caught fish, grass-fed beef, free-range poultry, and organic, non-GMO tofu and tempeh. These sources not only provide ample amounts of protein but also important nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, iron, and B vitamins.
  1. Protein is an essential component of a healthy diet. It supports countless functions within the body and is crucial for overall health and well-being. By choosing high-quality sources of protein and incorporating them into our diets regularly, we can ensure that our bodies have the building blocks they need to thrive.
