Sugar negatively impacts hormones that regulate appetite from "summary" of Fat Chance by Robert H. Lustig

The impact of sugar on our bodies is far-reaching, extending to the very hormones that control our appetite. When we consume excess sugar, particularly in the form of fructose, it disrupts the delicate balance of hormones that regulate hunger and satiety. One of the key players in this hormonal regulation is insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas in response to elevated blood sugar levels. Insulin helps to store excess glucose as fat, but it also plays a role in signaling the brain that we are full. However, when we consume large amounts of sugar, especially in the form of high-fructose corn syrup, our insulin levels spike, leading to insulin resistance over time. This resistance impairs the ability of insulin to effectively signal satiety to the brain, resulting in a constant feeling of hunger and a tendency to overeat. In addition to insulin, another hormone affected by sugar consumption is leptin. Leptin is produced by fat cells and acts as a signal to the brain that we have enough energy stored and do not need to eat more. When we consume excess sugar, particularly fructose, it disrupts the normal functioning of leptin, leading to a condition known as leptin resistance. This resistance prevents the brain from receiving the signal that we are full, further contributing to overeating and weight gain.
  1. The impact of sugar on our hormones that regulate appetite is significant and far-reaching. By disrupting the delicate balance of insulin and leptin, excess sugar consumption can lead to a chronic state of hunger, overeating, and weight gain. It is essential to be mindful of our sugar intake and its effects on our hormonal health.
