Sleep is crucial for memory consolidation from "summary" of Brain Rules (Updated and Expanded) by John Medina

Sleep is essential for memory consolidation. When we learn something new, our brain stores the information in short-term memory. But in order to move this information into long-term memory where it can be accessed later, we need sleep. During sleep, our brain reviews the information we learned during the day and strengthens the connections between neurons that store this information. Research shows that sleep helps to stabilize new memories, making them less susceptible to interference from other information. This process, known as memory consolidation, is crucial for learning and retaining new information over the long term. Without enough sleep, our ability to remember and recall information can be significantly impaired. One study found that participants who slept after learning a new task were better able to recall it compared to those who stayed awake. This suggests that sleep plays a vital role in the consolidation of memories and the integration of new information into our existing knowledge base. Furthermore, different stages of sleep play different roles in memory consolidation. While slow-wave sleep is important for strengthening memories, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep is crucial for integrating new information with existing knowledge and creating complex associative networks in the brain.
  1. Sleep is not just a time for rest and recovery, but also a critical process for memory consolidation. By ensuring that we get enough quality sleep, we can enhance our ability to learn, remember, and make sense of the world around us. So, the next time you're tempted to sacrifice sleep for other activities, remember that your brain needs rest to function at its best.
