The Strategy of Convenience can conserve willpower from "summary" of Better Than Before by Gretchen Rubin
The Strategy of Convenience can conserve willpower is a powerful tool for habit formation. By making desirable behaviors more convenient and undesirable behaviors less convenient, we can effectively conserve our limited reserves of willpower. This strategy takes advantage of the fact that we are more likely to engage in behaviors that are easy and accessible, while avoiding those that require effort and planning. One way to apply the Strategy of Convenience is to use the concept of "decision fatigue." When we are faced with too many choices or decisions throughout the day, our willpower is depleted, making it harder to resist temptation or follow through on our goals. By simplifying our environment and routines, we can reduce the number of decisions we need to make, thus conserving our willpower for more important tasks. Another aspect of convenience is setting up our physical environment to support our desired habits. For example, if we want to exercise more, we can make it easier by laying out our workout clothes the night before or keeping a pair of running shoes by the door. By removing barriers and creating cues for our desired behaviors, we can increase the likelihood of following through. In addition to physical convenience, we can also use technology to our advantage. By setting up reminders, notifications, or alarms on our devices, we can prompt ourselves to take action without relying solely on our willpower. This external support can be especially helpful when our internal motivation is low.- The Strategy of Convenience is about making the right choices the easiest choices. By designing our environment, routines, and habits in a way that minimizes resistance and maximizes convenience, we can make it easier to stay on track and achieve our goals. This strategy allows us to work with our natural tendencies and limitations, rather than against them, setting ourselves up for success in the long run.
