The digestive system breaks down food for energy from "summary" of Anatomy & Physiology by Kevin T. Patton

The digestive system is responsible for breaking down food into smaller molecules that can be absorbed and used by the body for energy. This complex process involves multiple organs working together to ensure that nutrients are properly extracted from the food we eat. The journey of food begins in the mouth, where mechanical digestion starts as we chew our food and mix it with saliva. Enzymes in saliva begin the process of breaking down carbohydrates into simpler sugars. Once food is swallowed, it travels down the esophagus and into the stomach, where it is further broken down by stomach acid and enzymes. The small intestine is where most of the digestion and absorption of nutrients takes place. Here, enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the liver help break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates into their basic building blocks. These nutrients are then absorbed through the walls of the small intestine and into the bloodstream for distribution to the cells of the body. The large intestine plays a crucial role in absorbing water and electrolytes from the remaining indigestible food particles, forming feces that are eventually eliminated from the body. Without the digestive system's ability to break down food and extract nutrients, our bodies would not be able to function properly.
