Kidneys filter waste and regulate water balance from "summary" of Anatomy & Physiology by Kevin T. Patton

The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining homeostasis within the body by filtering waste products from the blood and regulating water balance. This process is crucial for the overall health and functioning of the entire body. The filtration of waste products occurs in specialized structures within the kidneys called nephrons. Each kidney is composed of thousands of these nephrons, which work together to filter waste products from the blood and create urine. The waste products that are filtered out include urea, creatinine, and other toxic substances that need to be removed from the body. In addition to filtering waste products, the kidneys also play a key role in regulating water balance. They do this by adjusting the amount of water that is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream or excreted in the urine. This process helps to maintain proper hydration levels in the body and prevent dehydration or overhydration. The regulation of water balance is controlled by hormones such as antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and aldosterone, which signal the kidneys to either reabsorb more water or excrete more water depending on the body's needs. This intricate system of hormone regulation ensures that the body maintains a proper balance of fluids at all times.
  1. The kidneys are essential organs that perform the critical functions of filtering waste products and regulating water balance in the body. Without these functions, the body would be unable to remove toxic substances and maintain proper hydration levels, leading to serious health consequences.
