Suppressed anger can lead to illness from "summary" of When the Body Says No by Gabor Mate
When we are unable or unwilling to express our anger, our bodies suffer the consequences. Anger is a natural emotion that serves a purpose - it can alert us to boundaries that have been crossed or injustices that need to be addressed. However, when we suppress our anger, we deny ourselves the opportunity to acknowledge and process these feelings. This suppression can have a detrimental effect on our physical health. When we suppress our anger, we are essentially telling our bodies that these feelings are not important or valid. This disconnect between our emotions and our physical selves can manifest in a variety of ways. Our bodies may respond to this internal conflict by producing stress hormones, which can weaken our immune system and make us more susceptible to illness. In addition, this chronic suppression of anger can lead to the development of chronic conditions such as autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer. Furthermore, the inability to express anger can also lead to increased levels of emotional stress. This ongoing stress can further compromise our immune system and exacerbate existing health issues. In essence, the more we suppress our anger, the more we are putting our bodies at risk of developing illness.- We can prevent the negative impact that suppressed anger can have on our physical health. Our bodies have a way of communicating with us, and when we listen to what they are telling us, we can take steps to ensure our overall well-being.
