Seeking meaning in the face of suffering from "summary" of When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi
In the midst of suffering, I found myself grappling with the age-old question that has plagued humanity for generations: why do we suffer? It is a question that has no easy answer, yet it is a question that demands to be answered. As I faced my own mortality, I was forced to confront the reality of suffering in a way that I had never done before. It was raw, it was brutal, and it was unforgiving. But amidst the darkness, I found a glimmer of light. I found that in the face of suffering, there is an opportunity to seek meaning. It is a choice that we must make, a choice to find purpose and significance in the midst of our pain. For me, this meant delving into the depths of my own soul, confronting my fears and insecurities, and ultimately coming to terms with my own mortality. In seeking meaning in the face of suffering, I realized that suffering is not meaningless. It is a part of the human experience, a shared burden that unites us all. It is through suffering that we are able to cultivate empathy, compassion, and resilience. It is through suffering that we are able to truly appreciate the beauty and fragility of life. As I navigated the treacherous waters of my illness, I came to understand that suffering is not something to be avoided or feared. It is something to be embraced, for it is through suffering that we are able to grow and evolve as individuals. It is through suffering that we are able to find meaning and purpose in our lives.- As I faced my own mortality, I made a conscious decision to seek meaning in the face of suffering. I chose to confront my pain head-on, to wrestle with the existential questions that plagued my mind, and to ultimately find peace in the midst of chaos. In doing so, I discovered a profound sense of purpose and fulfillment that transcended the confines of my own mortality.
