Mindfulness can lead to a deep sense of connection to the world around us from "summary" of Waking Up by Sam Harris

When we practice mindfulness, we are engaging in a form of attention that is both relaxed and vivid. We are not lost in thought or distracted by our emotions; instead, we are simply aware of whatever is arising in our field of experience. This kind of attention can lead to a profound shift in our relationship to the world around us. As we cultivate mindfulness, we begin to see that our sense of self is not as solid or permanent as we once thought. We start to notice the ways in which our thoughts, emotions, and sensations come and go, and we realize that there is no fixed "I" at the center of it all. This insight can be both liberating and disconcerting, as we come to see that our usual sense of self is just a mental construct. With this recognition comes a deep sense of connection to the world around us. We see that we are not separate from the people, animals, and objects in our environment; we are all interconnected in a web of causes and conditions. This realization can lead to feelings of compassion, empathy, and love for all beings, as we recognize that their happiness and suffering are intimately linked to our own. Mindfulness also allows us to appreciate the beauty and richness of the present moment. Instead of constantly being lost in thoughts of the past or future, we learn to savor the sights, sounds, and sensations of the here and now. This kind of awareness can bring a sense of wonder and awe to our everyday experience, as we see the world with fresh eyes and an open heart. In this way, mindfulness can lead to a deep sense of connection to the world around us. It can help us to break free from the confines of our ego and to appreciate the interconnectedness of all things. As we continue to cultivate this kind of attention, we may find that our sense of self expands to include the whole of existence, and that our relationship to the world is transformed in profound and meaningful ways.
