In moments of mindfulness, there is a profound shift in our sense of identity. The feeling of being a separate self - an "I" distinct from the rest of the world - can temporarily vanish. This experience can be liberating because it frees us from the usual constraints of egoic consciousness. The ego is a construct of the mind, a story we tell ourselves about who we are. It is a source of suffering because it constantly seeks validation and protection. By identifying with the ego, we become trapped in a cycle of desire and aversion, always chasing after pleasure and running from pain.
