Systemic change requires a holistic perspective from "summary" of Thinking in Systems by Donella Meadows

To truly bring about meaningful change within a system, one must take a step back and adopt a holistic perspective. This means looking at the system as a whole, rather than focusing solely on its individual components. Each part of a system is interconnected and interdependent, meaning that changes in one part can have far-reaching effects on the system as a whole. By viewing the system holistically, one can better understand these relationships and anticipate the potential consequences of any changes that are made. A holistic perspective allows us to see the big picture and recognize the complex web of relationships that exist within a system. It helps us to understand that systems are dynamic and constantly evolving, with feedback loops and reinforcing loops that can either amplify or dampen the effects of change. By taking a holistic approach, we can identify leverage points within the system where small adjustments can lead to significant shifts in behavior. When we only focus on individual parts of a system, we run the risk of unintended consequences and unforeseen outcomes. By failing to consider the system as a whole, we may inadvertently create new problems or exacerbate existing ones. A holistic perspective forces us to consider the interconnectedness of all parts of a system and to think about the long-term implications of our actions. In order to bring about systemic change, it is essential to adopt a holistic perspective that takes into account the complexity and interconnectedness of the system. This means looking beyond the surface level of individual components and considering how they interact and influence each other. Only by viewing the system as a whole can we hope to create lasting and meaningful change that addresses the root causes of issues rather than just their symptoms.
