Vitamin D deficiency is common in certain populations from "summary" of The Vitamin D Solution by Michael F. Holick Ph.D., M.D.

It is a well-established fact that certain populations are at a higher risk of developing a deficiency in vitamin D. This is due to a variety of factors, including limited sun exposure, dark skin pigmentation, aging, obesity, and certain medical conditions. For example, individuals who spend most of their time indoors, such as office workers or individuals in institutionalized settings, may not receive adequate sunlight exposure to produce enough vitamin D in their skin. Similarly, people with darker skin pigmentation have higher levels of melanin, which can reduce the skin's ability to produce vitamin D in response to sunlight. As we age, our skin becomes less efficient at synthesizing vitamin D, making older adults more susceptible to deficiency. Furthermore, obesity can also impact vitamin D levels, as the vitamin can become sequestered in fat tissue, reducing its availability for use by the body. Certain medical conditions, such as malabsorption disorders, liver or kidney disease, and certain medications can also interfere with the body's ability to absorb and metabolize vitamin D effectively.
  1. It is not surprising that vitamin D deficiency is prevalent in certain populations. Recognizing these at-risk groups and taking proactive steps to address their vitamin D needs is crucial in promoting overall health and well-being. By increasing awareness and access to vitamin D supplementation or dietary sources, we can help mitigate the risk of deficiency in these vulnerable populations.
