Myelin sheath insulation improves brain function from "summary" of The Talent Code by Daniel Coyle

Myelin sheath insulation, the fatty substance that coats our brain's nerve fibers, plays a crucial role in improving brain function. Myelin acts as an insulator, speeding up the transmission of electrical impulses along the nerve fibers. When we repeatedly fire a particular circuit in our brain, the myelin around that circuit thickens, enhancing the speed and accuracy of the signal transmission. This process, known as myelination, is essential for skill acquisition and talent development. In essence, the more we practice a skill or task, the more myelin is produced around the neural pathways involved, making the signals travel faster and more efficiently. This explains why deliberate practice is so effective in building expertise. As we engage in focused and purposeful practice, we stimulate the growth of myelin around the relevant circuits in our brain, leading to improved performance and mastery of the skill. ...
