Habits are created through a cueroutine-reward loop from "summary" of The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg

In the world of habits, there exists a powerful loop that shapes our behaviors on a daily basis. This loop consists of three components: cue, routine, and reward. The cue is a trigger that tells your brain which habit to use. It can be anything from a specific time of day to a certain emotion or location. Once the cue is recognized, your brain goes into automatic mode and follows a routine that has been established through repetition. The routine is the actual behavior or action that you perform in response to the cue. This can range from something as simple as brushing your teeth to more complex behaviors like smoking a cigarette or going for a run. The routine is what ultimately defines the habit and is what most people think of when they hear the word "habit". Finally, there is the reward, which is the positive reinforcement that your brain receives after completing the routine. This reward is what reinforces the habit loop and makes it more likely that you will repeat the behavior in the future. Rewards can vary from person to person and can be anything from a feeling of accomplishment to a physical sensation like a sugar rush.
  1. We can gain insight into how habits are formed and how they can be changed. By identifying the cues that trigger our habits, we can begin to change our routines and ultimately replace old habits with new, healthier ones. This process requires mindfulness and effort, but with practice, it is possible to break free from destructive habits and create positive, lasting change in our lives.
